GIN CONFERENCE

2019 CONFERENCE

"Committing to our worlds most vulnerable People, Places and Resources"

14th Annual GIN Conference in Europe, 27th - 30th March 2019

At the end of March, a small group of students traveled to Luxembourg to represent the ISH at the global issues conference. The event had over 30 schools participating with a wide diversity of nationalities. “The days at the conference we got to listen to inspirational people, motivating workshops and enlightening presentations as well as meet like-minded students from all around the world.”. The group hosted a workshop on Yemen to raise awareness of its ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The conference lasted for 3 days; Thursday to Saturday and many different issues were discussed and presented by the student workshop and the keynote speakers. After and during the conference students were able to socialize and make friends with other people that were passionate about the same issues. They also explored Luxembourg city by cycling through it and visiting popular sights.

We all had a great time and we hope to repeat it next year!

What is a GIN Conference?

A GIN Conference is an annual event, where schools from all over the world (but mainly based in Europe) gather together and learn about different issues from the workshops that they prepare and attend, and - of course- learn from each other.

For the past few years, it has been hosted in Luxembourg, by the ISL. GIN at ISH gives an opportunity to around 6-8 students to attend this conference every year and learn about different issues and gain new ideas so we can improve GIN at our school and use the knowledge we gain from these conferences.

It is also a great opportunity to meet new people, as well as explore the city of Luxembourg.

The trip as a whole was an amazing and invigorating experience! It was filled with learning opportunities which a regular school day doesn’t offer: such as giving a speech in front of 250 people, having workshops where you collaborate with new students on a daily basis while thinking of sustainable solutions for global issues. Also, CEO's of different organisation (linked to GIN) shared very interesting information!

After a very exciting yet exhausting trip to Luxembourg, I have come back glowing and ready to take action at the ISH. We had an overwhelming amount of inspiration for sustainability being given to us from all directions, coming from school students like me, NGO’s, individual initiatives, and more, and so many ideas have been created. One of my favorite guest speakers was the creator of “living on one dollar”, and he had a workshop where we learned about how to film our own movies about issues that we were really passionate about. Apart from the actual conference, I really enjoyed meeting new people that all had something very interesting to say, and also building relationships with the people that came from ISH with me. I really enjoyed going to Luxembourg, and if I was allowed to go next year I definitely would.

Within just a week of the conference we already have several new initiatives getting off the ground: an innovative sustainable toilet paper scheme which uses our recycled paper, a baking club at an elderly home in our neighborhood and a school building project to help address poverty in Tanzania. We can’t wait to see what this motivated and inspiring group of students will come up with next!
